Who Are You (Not) Gonna Call?

Anyone out there NOT see the original 1984 movie “Ghostbusters”?  This hilarious movie starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver.  The film’s iconic theme song was written by Ray Parker, Jr., who was known previously for writing romantic songs.  According to Mr. Parker, he was on a tight 2.5 day deadline to write/record the song.  Although nominated for an Academy Award for the Ghostbusters song, he lost that year to Stevie Wonder’s song, “I Just Called To Say I Love You”, that was the theme song to the movie “Lady In Red”.

Today we ain’t talking about ghosts, but rather, “Fatbusters”, otherwise known as “Fat Burners”.   There are many advertisements and marketing for supplements purported to be “Fat burners”.  Typically, these supplements contain:

  • Caffeine. This is a common ingredient because it stimulates your nervous system and potentially helps burn calories. Supplements may contain more caffeine than your typical coffee, tea, or chocolate.
  • Green tea extract. This is another common ingredient because green tea helps burn calories and reduce the fat you absorb from food.
  • Carnitine. This is a compound that boosts your metabolism and gives you energy. It can be found in meat and dairy products, and it’s made naturally by your liver and kidneys. However, its weight-loss benefits are questionable.
  • Yohimbe. This is another plant compound that comes from the bark of an evergreen tree. It’s common in fat burner supplements but can cause negative effects.

The advertisements usually show “before and after” pictures showing an incredible amount of fat loss.  BUT, lots of fine print stating that the results are not typical, diet and exercise was used, etc etc.

The bottom line for “Fatbusters(burners)”:  Beware of buying any supplements that tout “easy fat loss” or “miraculous weight loss”.  Perhaps there can be some minor beneficial impacts but in no way do these replace the need for diligence in following the proper dietary and exercise regimens.

And, if you are struggling on your own to shed that weight, Who Are YOU Gonna Call?  Dr. Posner!

Enjoy one of the most memorable movie songs ever…
